Our farm is located in southern Queensland, near Allora. It is a family owned property, with a focus on sustainable farming practices to result in the best produce for our customers, whilst looking after our animals.
The benefit of traditional free-range egg production is limited to the hens being able to move freely. Unfortunately, many free-range hens are limited to a single location and they quickly destroy all bio-diversity within their “range”. As a result their diets are limited to the mechanically provided grain. Due to the limited regulation of free ranging, on most farms the space available to each hen is decreased as profit is pursued, diminishing the hen’s ability to be truly free range.
We are very mindful of the industry standards currently governing free-range egg production – in a nutshell:
Legally in Queensland the stocking rate cannot exceed 10,000 birds per hectare (1 bird per square metre)
Plenty of free range eggs are produced and marketed at this stocking density rate, they are housed in permanent structures and let to free range 1 bird per square metre - in our view not enough room for birds to display natural behaviour such as eating insects and seed, enjoying dust baths and having a good stretch of the wings
Can you imagine 7000 chooks living day in, day out on a football field? That is what it is like on these farms.
We also apply this free range or pastured philosophy to all our animals and the results speak for themselves - happy animals mean delicious produce.
